Hardwood vs Softwood

In the UK and Ireland today there is still a lot of soft wood sold and a likely place to see this would be on garage forecourts. Although, recently there has been a move towards using hardwood because of its hotter and longer lasting combustion properties.

 Differences

Hardwood comes from trees that lose their leaves in winter (deciduous) so trees such as ash, birch, oak, beech etc. These trees grow slowly (80-100 years) and therefore, provide a very dense timber. Softwood (coniferous) grows much faster, typically maturing in 25-30 years and therefore the wood is much less dense. Typical softwoods would include pine, larch, spruce, fir etc.

 Burning

Softwood tends to burn very fast and produce resin which may spit, which is why we don’t stock softwood logs. It does, however, ignite quickly which makes it perfect for kindling to get your fire going. Our kindling is kiln-dried, softwood for this purpose.

To Sum Up..

So, whilst softwood ignites quickly (if dried to 20% moisture or below) and it has the same calorific value as hardwood by weight, you will typically need twice as many logs for burning to due the difference in density.
